Split3r – Automatically split your 3D files

About this project

Fast CoreXY printers brought 3D printing down to a few hundred dollars, but one limit never moved: build volume. Printing oversized parts meant buying an expensive large-format machine, or manually cutting models — hours of slicing, join design and trial and error. Split3r by French developer Philippe Boichut automates the whole thing. Drag in an oversized STL, pick your printer from a 150+ model library, and the software — built on Blender's geometry engine — cuts it into perfectly sized sections with auto-generated tenons and hollow pyramid locators. It chews through 250MB-class files in minutes, engraves part numbers automatically, and produces labeled exploded views so assembly feels like LEGO. The maker's math says a farm of ten $400 printers beats one industrial large-format machine on both speed and cost. Launched in September 2025, it drew 2,501 backers and about €114,405 (roughly $133K), around 677% funded.

Highlights

  • Big parts without big printers: split and assemble on ordinary machines — ten $400 printers beat one industrial one
  • Drag, drop, split: pick your printer and adjust cuts; tenons generated automatically, no CAD skills needed
  • Assembly without confusion: auto-engraved part numbering and labeled exploded views
  • Bonus support savings: splitting complex models drastically cuts support material
