About this project

Every 3D-printing household has the same pile: failed prints, supports, purge waste — bags of PLA you feel guilty throwing away. ExtrudeX is an open-source desktop filament recycler. Shred the waste, mix it with virgin pellets, pour into the hopper, and a worm-gear DC motor drives a screw that slowly pushes the plastic through a heated metal barrel until it melts and extrudes as a 1.7 mm round strand ready to be spooled again. What makes it special is its self-replicating nature: the machine's structural parts are themselves 3D printable. For heavy printers, it is a practical closed loop from waste bin back to filament. Launched in December 2025, it drew 2,827 backers and $209,348, over 10,000% funded.

Highlights

  • The machine prints itself: fully 3D-printable structure you can reprint anytime
  • Waste into filament: failed prints and purge waste remelted into fresh 1.7 mm strand
  • Transparent mechanics: worm-gear motor, screw and heated barrel — simple and hackable
  • Saves money and cuts waste: the more you print, the more it pays off
