WorkBuddy: Tencent's all-scenario AI office workbench

workbuddy

Tencent's office agent: state the requirement and it plans, calls tools and generates files, leaving both process and result for review — connected to Tencent's IM, docs, mail, meetings and knowledge base.

Editor's take

WorkBuddy earns a ladder slot because it gets the output form of an office agent right: the deliverable is a file (report / deck / spreadsheet) rather than a paragraph, and the "process plus result for you to review" step is explicit. In real office work an un-auditable process is an unusable one.

The real differentiator is the ecosystem: connection into Tencent's office IM, documents, email, meetings and knowledge base. The ceiling of an office agent is largely set by what it can read. A generic assistant cannot see your meeting notes, so it can never write anything with context. That is hard for others to copy.

Third is compliance: ISO 27001 / SOC 2 / China Level-3, plus RBAC and audit logs. For government and finance that is the gate into procurement, and the most concrete part of the credential.

Confidence: C (vendor claim). Checkable: product form, the four scenarios, platform coverage, the certification list, and Tencent authorship (official site). Not checkable: time claims like "a report in 15 minutes" and output quality — there is no independent comparison, so the card states only the vendor-claimed item and no accuracy figure.

Positioning: not "an assistant that writes", a workbench that finishes the job

Tencent's one-liner for WorkBuddy is "state the requirement, start the task, receive a finished deliverable." The product page is more specific: it plans autonomously, calls tools, generates files, and leaves both the process and the result for you to review. The deliverable is a file — a report, a deck, a spreadsheet — not a chat reply. That is what separates it from question-answering AI, and it is what office work actually asks for: you do not want advice, you want something you can send.

The four scenarios it lists

  • Research — deep investigation. Give it a topic; it lays out search paths, cross-validates sources, and produces a structured report, competitive matrix and strategic recommendations. The vendor-claimed turnaround is a report in 15 minutes.
  • Documents — organising material and producing finished copy.
  • Design — visual output.
  • Development — engineering tasks.

On execution it emphasises parallel multi-agent work: a complex task is split and several agents push at once. That is a sensible choice — the bottleneck in office work is rarely any single step, it is the number of steps and the waiting between them.

The real differentiator: sitting inside Tencent's office suite

The most consequential line on the page is that WorkBuddy connects seamlessly to office IM, documents, email, meetings and knowledge bases — Tencent's own ecosystem. Half the value of an office agent is not the model; it is whether it can reach your actual working material. Without your meeting notes and knowledge base it can only write generic copy; with them it might write "the plan we agreed in last week's meeting". That moat comes from the ecosystem, not the model, which makes it hard for anyone else to copy.

Security and compliance: the ticket into enterprises

Three things on the page are worth taking at face value: end-to-end data encryption (TLS/AES-256 in transit and at rest, independently held keys), fine-grained access control (role-based multi-level permissions plus audit logs, so admins control who can access, edit and export each piece of content), and certifications (ISO 27001, SOC 2, China's Level-3 classified protection). For individuals these are reassurance; for finance and government they are a precondition to purchase.

Platforms

Coverage is broad: Mac, Windows, Linux and HarmonyOS desktop builds; iOS, Android and HarmonyOS mobile; plus a mini-program entry. The site offers both a direct download and a browser-based route.

AlphaEvolve: pointing a model at problems that come with an objective scoring function

Google DeepMind's coding-agent-driven evolutionary search: Gemini Flash proposes candidates in volume and Gemini Pro in quality, automatic evaluators score them, and high scorers stay in the population as next-round context, i.e. evolutionary search with an LLM as the mutation operator; it applies only where an automatic evaluator exists, hence the math and agents filing. An evolved scheduling heuristic has run in production in Google data centres (Borg) for over a year, recovering 0.7% of Google's global compute (Google's compute, not all compute on earth), the card reading and the only result validated by long-running production. An evolved matmul kernel is 23% faster at specific sizes, and about 20% of 50+ open maths problems improved, including 4x4 complex matrix multiplication in 48 multiplications against Strassen's 1969 record of 49. Verification differs from the prover line: a Lean check is mathematical correctness, "23% faster" is an empirical reading on specific hardware. No public weights, Early Access is a waitlist, and the precondition is an evaluator you write yourself. Graded B (contested): a year of production behind the Borg result, nothing reproduced.

Gamma: the orchestration tool that turns a body of source material into a presentable deck

What Gamma does is not "prompt for one slide" but reorganise existing material into something presentable: it ingests long documents, PDFs, pasted text or a URL, and returns a full deck with outline, pagination, imagery and layout, in a card-based structure where each page can be reordered, rewritten or re-illustrated on its own. It represents the kind of AI that is genuinely useful in the documents vertical - the value is in orchestration and editorial selection, not in generation quality. Its ceiling is equally clear: the output lives in Gamma's own layout system, and exporting to pptx loses a layer of fidelity - which happens to be a hard requirement for most organisations.
