BLOOMIN8 E-Ink Canvas-World's First Smart COLOUR E-Ink Frame

About this project

Digital art frames aren't new, but LCD versions can't escape two flaws: backlight glare in dim rooms and a permanent power cord. Sydney's arpobot solves both with color E-Ink. BLOOMIN8 bills itself as the world's first smart colour E-Ink frame. The 28.5-inch canvas uses E Ink Spectra 6 on Sharp IGZO technology — emissive-free and paper-like. It draws power only when the image refreshes, so a single charge lasts years, and the last image stays visible even with the battery dead. Hang it anywhere, no wires. The free iOS/Android app includes AI art generation and a curated gallery; smart-home users get a local Home Assistant integration that keeps everything on your own Wi-Fi with no third-party servers. Brushed aluminum finish, compatible with IKEA RÖDALM frames. Launched in March 2025, it drew 2,272 backers and about AU$2.40 million (roughly $1.537M), around 7,992% funded.

Highlights

  • True paper look: emissive-free color E-Ink reads like a real print on the wall
  • Charge once, display for years: power is only drawn when the image changes
  • Fully local control: Home Assistant integration keeps images on your own network
  • AI plus curation: in-app generation, a curated gallery, and multi-user family sharing
