FocusRay - VR FacialTracking Device

About this project

The most awkward part of VR socializing is your avatar's permanent poker face — smiles reduced to controller toggles, real emotions trapped behind the headset. FocusRay turns Project Babble's open-source face tracking into affordable hardware: an OV9281 global-shutter camera captures expressions at 120fps while built-in IR illuminators keep tracking stable in total darkness. The wired model weighs just 35g; the wireless version carries a Li-Po cell for about 3 hours, charging over USB-C, with mounts for major headsets and a planned eye-tracking add-on. Launched in March 2026, the project drew 1,306 backers and raised about ¥18.49M (~$117,000) against a ¥4M goal — about 462% funded.

Highlights

  • 120fps global shutter: no rolling artifacts, catches even fleeting expressions
  • IR illumination: full face tracking even in total darkness
  • 35g palm-sized: barely noticeable mounted on your headset
  • Same camera in both models: pick wired or wireless by budget
