X-Fly: The Drone Designed to Soar Like a Bird

About this project

Quadcopters all fly and sound the same, and their propellers are loud and risky; classic ornithopters are so hard to pilot that the bird-like elegance never shows. X-Fly is billed as the first sensor-assisted ornithopter: sensors co-developed with a French Army R&D program correct imbalance in realtime for steady flight even in wind, with zero training required. A wider wingspan improves gliding indoors and outdoors, the battery ejects for instant swaps, and the open platform grows with LED, ultrasonic avoidance and GPS plugins — the culmination of a decade of biomimetic flight from the Bionic Bird team. Launched in November 2023, the project drew 1,193 backers and raised €136,741 (~$150,000) against a €25,000 goal — about 547% funded.

Highlights

  • Sensor-assisted: realtime balance correction, no training needed
  • Ejectable battery: swap in seconds, never wait
  • Open platform: LED, ultrasonic and GPS plugins coming
  • Biomimetic flapping with wider wingspan for stable glide
