UCLA researchers built PhoneBot, a 48 cm open humanoid platform with 13 low-cost actuators in a modular lower body and a commodity smartphone mounted in the torso as its sensing and compute unit. The phone supplies the IMU, camera, wireless link and onboard processing for stable locomotion, vision-based human following and standing back up after a fall, with hardware cost around 400 dollars excluding the phone.
