About this project
Moon Pi may be the most romantic tech campaign ever: humans have calculated pi on Earth for millennia, and now Matt Parker — math comedian and world-record holder for hand-calculated pi digits — aims to become among the first to calculate pi on another celestial body, in his trademark absurd style.
The payload flies on Astrobotic's Griffin-1, the largest lunar lander built since Apollo, targeting the Nobile Region at the lunar South Pole; after landing, the CubeRover-1 rover carries the experiment onto the surface. Backers can genuinely join the computation.
Launched in June 2025, it raised about £383,950 (≈$523K) against a £75,000 goal — around 512% funding from 4,874 backers.
Highlights
- ✓First-ever pi calculation on another celestial body — math, spaceflight and performance art collide
- ✓Led by Matt Parker, the famous communicator known for calculating pi in ridiculous ways
- ✓Rides Astrobotic's Griffin-1, the largest lunar lander built since Apollo
- ✓Backers genuinely participate — their contributions appear in the on-Moon computation
